Cervicometry: Ultrasound of the Cervix

Cervicometry is an additional ultrasound examination of the cervix. This is a safe diagnostic procedure that is usually performed on pregnant women between 12 and 22 weeks of gestation. Cervicometry can also be performed at other times.

The main goal of cervicometry is to assess the risk of preterm labor.

Indications for cervicometry include:

Shortened cervix.

History of cervical procedures (e.g. conization) or other reproductive organ surgeries before pregnancy.

Trauma to the genital organs before conception.

Multiple pregnancies.

Diagnosed ICN (isthmic-cervical insufficiency).

Wearing an obstetric pessary.

The cervix is not visualized transabdominally.

There are no contraindications for cervicometry. It is important to remember that the examination is prescribed as needed.

WHAT DOES CERVICOMETRY SHOW?

The doctor performs the diagnosis using a vaginal probe. Cervicometry allows the evaluation of the state of the cervix both externally and internally. The results are documented in a report that is given to the patient. Based on the data from the report, such as the size of the cervix and the condition of the tissues, the obstetrician-gynecologist can assess the risk of premature delivery and take measures to prevent it.

HOW IS CERVICOMETRY PERFORMED?

The diagnosis is performed like any other ultrasound examination. For cervicometry with a transvaginal probe, the patient needs to remove clothing, lie down on a couch and bend her knees. The doctor puts a condom on the probe, lubricates it with gel, and inserts it into the vagina.

The procedure is not uncomfortable and is safe for both the mother and the fetus. It takes no longer than 10-15 minutes.

PREPARATION FOR CERVICAL MEASUREMENT

This type of examination does not require special preparation, except for emptying the bladder. A full bladder will not allow clear visualization of the cervix.
