Vertebrology

Vertebrology is a branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the spine, especially the spinal column and its structures, such as vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments and muscles. A vertebrologist identifies the causes of back pain and abnormalities in the spinal structure, and develops a treatment plan that may include medications, physiotherapy, massage, orthopedic correctors, rehabilitation exercises, and other methods. Vertebrology is also focused on preventing spinal diseases and maintaining back health. The vertebrologist who sees us has a specialization in neurosurgery. This means that, if indicated, he will also perform surgical treatment of spinal diseases.
Symptoms and complaints when you should visit a vertebrologist:
Discomfort, pain in the neck, back, and lower back.
Posture disorders.
Numbness, impaired sensitivity in the arms or legs, and a feeling of “goosebumps.”
Pain in the upper and lower extremities and pelvis, weakness in the upper and lower extremities.
A consultation with a vertebrologist begins with anamnesis, familiarization with previous examinations (if any), and physical examination.

Diseases treated by a vertebrologist:

  • Osteochondrosis of the thoracic, cervical and lumbar spine
  • Undifferentiated pain in the lower back (lowback pain)
  • Herniated intervertebral discs
  • Spondyloarthritis
  • Degenerative spinal stenosis
  • Pathological fractures of vertebral bodies
  • Tumors of the spinal cord

Diagnosis of vertebral diseases
To make and clarify the diagnosis, a vertebrologist can refer to one of the instrumental diagnostic methods: MRI, CT or X-ray. It is important to undergo these examinations only as directed by a doctor, not to prescribe them yourself. These are the methods that carry radiation risks and their appointment should be targeted and justified. The vertebrologist of our center refers to diagnostics according to indications.

Treatment by a vertebrologist in Med-Atlant

МедАтлант
Depending on the diagnosis and stage of the disease, the vertebrologist prescribes one of the methods or a combination of them:
МедАтлант
1. Conservative treatment.

2. Pain Management (pain relief) using minimally invasive techniques: – medication blocks (epidural steroid injections)
– nucleoplasty;
– epidural adhesiolysis;
– radiofrequency denervation for chronic back pain that cannot be relieved by conservative treatment.

3. Surgical treatment.

Methods of treatment by a vertebrologist

1
Radiofrequency denervation
under the control of the operating electronic optical transducer, the spine surgeon brings the needle to the medial branche of the posterior branch of the spinal nerve (i.e., to the nerve that innervates the facet joint). A special electrode is inserted along the needle and heated to a temperature of 90 degrees for 2 minutes. Due to this, the nerve is demyelinated and cannot conduct painful stimuli. The method is used for chronic back pain that cannot be relieved by conservative treatment.
2
Drug blockades
is an effective method in which medicinal substances are injected directly into the affected area (spasmodic muscles, pinched nerve root, joint bag). The advantages of this treatment are a quick effect in localized relief of the inflammatory process and minimization of side effects for the whole body due to direct action on the inflamed area.
3
Nucleoplasty
effective treatment for chronically progressive protrusion and herniation of the intervertebral disc. Nucleoplasty is an outpatient procedure in which a needle with an electrode is inserted into the affected intervertebral disc, heating occurs and, as a result, the hernia is reduced, a kind of “evaporation”. The procedure is painless and does not require special rehabilitation.
4
Epidural adhesiolysis
according to this method, a catheter is inserted into the epidural space to the affected intervertebral disc and within 3 days, medications and a 10% sodium chloride solution are injected through the catheter, which dehydrates the hernia (in simple words, “hernia drying”).
5
Conservative treatment prescribed by a vertebrologist
is a course of intramuscular or intravenous medication. It is combined with blockades and surgical treatment.
6
Surgical treatment of spinal diseases
is advisable for those conditions and pathologies when other therapy is not effective. In Med-Atlant, you will be consulted by a neurosurgeon, which is the key to the correct treatment tactics.

Med-Atlant Response:

Надіє, щиро раді, що допомогли, це найбільша цінність для нас! Здоров'я Вам, нехай все буде добре і надалі!
