Pulmonology

Pulmonology is a medical field that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs. A pulmonologist is a doctor who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases related to the respiratory system. He or she can perform various examinations, including functional and instrumental studies, such as spirometry, lung radiography, computed tomography, bronchoscopy, and others. A pulmonologist helps determine the cause of symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and others, and develops an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

The work of a pulmonologist is closely related to the work of doctors of other specialties – therapists, cardiologists, oncologists, phthisiologists, allergists, thoracic surgeons, gastroenterologists. A consultation with a pulmonologist is also useful for prevention, especially for smokers over the age of 35.

How to prepare for a visit to a pulmonologist?
A consultation with a doctor does not require any special preparation. If you have a medical history, please bring all previous medical records and recent examination results.

Diagnosis of pulmonary diseases

During the consultation, the doctor will find out what the symptoms of the disease are, how often and under what conditions they occur, how long they last, when and what treatment the person received. The doctor will also ask about risk factors (smoking, working in harmful conditions, family history of respiratory diseases).
For a detailed assessment of the patient’s condition, additional examinations are performed or prescribed: Toggle Button
blood test (general, biochemical, culture, immunological, for thrombosis markers),
sputum analysis (general, culture),
pulse oximetry,
pleural puncture (if indicated in other medical institutions),
bronchoscopy (referral according to indications as a diagnostic and therapeutic method),
imaging (ultrasound of the lungs, which can be done in our medical center, as well as referrals for radiography, CT of the lungs),
pulmonary angiography (prescribed for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism).
To establish the diagnosis, a pulmonologist needs to examine the patient, auscultate (listen) and percussion (tap) the respiratory organs.

To clarify the relationship between respiratory pathology and other diseases, such examinations as gastroscopy, electrocardiography, and cardiac ultrasound may be prescribed.

A doctor is competent to diagnose respiratory diseases. In order to treat some of them, the doctor may refer to other narrowly specialized specialists or work with them collectively.

Diagnosis of diseases is carried out by a pulmonologist, and treatment is collegial or by other narrowly specialized specialists:

1
diseases of the upper respiratory tract (referral to an otolaryngologist is possible);
2
Pulmonary tuberculosis (treated by phthisiologists in other medical institutions);
3
Oncopathology (comprehensive treatment by a pulmonologist, oncologist, chemotherapist, surgeon);
4
Lung abscesses (require bronchoscopy, consultation with a thoracic surgeon, and inpatient treatment);
5
bronchiectasis (requires bronchoscopy, inpatient treatment during exacerbation);
6
pleurisy (inflammation of the pleura is treated together with a thoracic surgeon);
7

METHODS OF TREATMENT OF PULMONARY DISEASES

At the Med-Atlant Medical Center, a pulmonologist prescribes treatment, depending on the diagnosis, and gives recommendations on diet, adequate physical activity, daily routine and lifestyle. Drug therapy as prescribed may include antibiotics, corticosteroids and non-hormonal anti-inflammatory drugs, bronchodilators (bronchodilators), mucolytics (expectorants), antitussives (as indicated), anticoagulants, thrombolytics, etc. Drug therapy can be prescribed in the form of tablets, inhalers, and injections.

PREVENTION OF PULMONARY DISEASES.

Prevention of pulmonary diseases is based on smoking cessation, including passive smoking, avoidance of work involving inhalation of toxic substances, good nutrition and active lifestyle.
Smokers over 35 years of age are recommended to undergo preventive examinations and spirometry by a pulmonologist at least once every 2 years.
