Ectopia of the cervix

Cervical ectopy (or cervical erosion) is what used to be called pseudoerosion of the cervical mucosa. This condition in modern medicine is not qualified as an independent disease and is not a pathology. However, this may indicate hormonal changes, the result of traumatic changes, and the presence of an unwanted local inflammatory process. Depending on the results of the examination, tests and reproductive plans of the woman, a gynecologist determines whether and what treatment is necessary.

Cervical ectopy is usually called erosion of the cervix, which is not correct. Because erosion is a defect of the epithelium, and cervical ectopia is the placement of epithelium from the cervical canal (cylindrical epithelium) on the surface of the cervix. Most often, ectopy of the cylindrical epithelium is detected in women aged 20 to 40 years. There are many myths and inaccurate information associated with this condition. That is why it is important to consult a doctor who will examine, establish the correct diagnosis and determine the next steps.

Symptoms of cervical ectopy

Symptomatically, this condition may not manifest itself in any way, and changes on the cervix will be noticed only by a gynecologist during an examination. Women may complain of increased secretions and possible bleeding after sexual intercourse due to traumatization of the cervix.

Causes of the pathological condition of the cervix

In adult women, the causes of cervical ectopy can be:

  • sexually transmitted infectious diseases;
  • violation of vaginal microflora;
  • postpartum injuries and other cervical injuries;
  • changes in hormonal status.

Preventive examinations are important for diagnosing existing abnormalities. Even when nothing worries you, visit your gynecologist once a year and check your health.

WHAT DOES A WOMAN NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CERVICAL ECTOPIA?

Do not neglect the doctor’s recommendations, if treatment is prescribed, especially when the human papilloma virus (HPV) is detected. With any infection, the replacement of epithelial cells slows down, and in the presence of HPV, any damage to the cervix is a fertile environment for changes that can lead to a precancerous condition.

Do not engage in self-medication based on the advice of friends or from the Internet. Even if your friend has the same gynecological diagnosis, the treatment, if necessary, is selected by a doctor individually.

Prevention of cervical ectopy of the cervix

For prevention, you should follow the basic rules:

  • When changing partners, have sex with barrier contraception.
  • Examination by a gynecologist once a year.
  • HPV status once every 3 years.
  • PAP-test once a year.

In general, for women’s health, it is recommended to undergo an ultrasound examination and a mammologist’s examination once a year. All diagnostics can be done in our clinic. A special women’s package has been developed for ultrasound, in which, in addition to the pelvic organs and mammary glands, a doctor also examines the thyroid gland.

Take care of your health and make an appointment for an examination with a gynecologist in building 1 or building 2 of “Med-Atlant” using the contact numbers or appointment form.
