Cause and factors of paraproctitis

Inflammation is caused by tissue infection. The infection causes swelling and blockage of the ducts, a cyst is formed, and then suppuration and fistulas.
Factors contributing to the infection are:

untreated proctologic diseases (hemorrhoids, anal fissures);

frequent constipation or diarrhea;

diabetes mellitus in the stage of decompensation;

frequent hypothermia;

insufficiently thorough hygiene of the anus.

Injuries to the rectum (traumatic use of sex toys, damage from an enema tip, etc.) can also be a factor in the development of paraproctitis.

Types of paraproctitis

According to the localization of suppuration, paproctitis can be:

subcutaneous and submucosal are the mildest forms of the disease;

gluteo-rectal – suppuration and swelling spread to the muscles;

pelvic-rectal – the most complicated form, when the cavity with pus is part of the pelvis, threatening with sepsis and death.

The form of paraproctitis can be acute, chronic or recurrent. In the latter two, rectal fistulas are formed. Any form of the disease requires surgical treatment, and in the case of acute inflammation, treatment should be immediate after diagnosis and confirmation of the diagnosis.

Symptoms of paraproctitis

The insidiousness of this disease is that symptomatically the pathology of the chronic course is similar to ARVI, cystitis, sciatica and other diseases, and time is lost. That is why we recommend not to neglect consultations with a proctologist, including for prevention.

Symptoms of paraproctitis:

Lethargy, apathy.

Headache.

Pain in the joints, lower back.

Pain in the perineum.

Increase in body temperature from subfebrile to fever.

Symptoms vary depending on the location of the abscess and the degree of development of the disease.

Diagnosis of paraproctitis by a proctologist

Next, the doctor conducts a chair examination (finger examination and anoscopy). These examinations are painless in themselves, there may be pain discomfort only from the existing pathology.

The only way to treat paraproctitis is surgical. Untreated paraproctitis has many serious consequences: adhesions, inflammation of the urethra, inflammation of the pelvic peritoneum, and even sepsis.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. A proctologist opens the cavity with suppuration, removes pus and damaged tissue, drains it, and sutures it.

The standard length of stay in the hospital is one day, but it can be extended by a doctor’s prescription.

It is important for the patient to understand that strict adherence to the doctor’s recommendations for the postoperative period (dressings, medication, avoidance of exertion, diet) is also important for successful treatment.

Prevention of paraproctitis

The main prevention of this disease is timely and complete treatment of proctologic diseases. Can paraproctitis be cured without surgery?

Unfortunately, it is not possible. It is better to have a scheduled surgery than to have a more complicated surgery and a longer recovery period with complications from the disease.
